YET ANOTHER FU*KING THANK YOU! 01/29/2007 at 07:36 AM

14.5 million on 2200 screens. That's about a thousand less than
most movies open on. We kicked ass guys. We were told that anywhere
from 50,000 to 75,000 admissions may have been underage kids
sneaking into our film. I hope you little bastards aren't permanently
scarred!

I'm making a list of all this blog's most consistent contributors and
then I'm going to post it and ask for everybody's e-mail and address.
Then I'm going to send you guys some love from our end.

Also, I've got some signed posters for some of you kids and I'm going
to be getting into that this week as well.

Again guys. You made my weekend. Truly. You didn't listen to those
bloated, outdated, outmoded critics and their flaccid opining, you went
and experienced it yourselves and the numbers scream that loud and clear.
With every passing weekend, the ranks of the professional critic seem more
and more irrelevant. I would encourage those of you that want to pursue
a critical study in film, to do so by engaging movies at every level and trying
to inform rather than condemn, which is all critics can seem to do these
days. David Denby, of The New Yorker, was not fond of 'Smokin' Aces' however,
he still remains one of the only critics I will read because he's an exceptional
writer and I didn't mind the reasons he didn't like the film, even if I do disagree
with them.

His review wasn't completely dismissive and it attempted to highlight the things he
did appreciate. That's the goal. Not some lame hatchet job that you could get from
any asshole on a message board. Richard Schickel from Time, also didn't care
for the film, but he couldn't have been a bigger douchebag about it. Schickel is also
roughly the same age as Yoda and has lost a little of the contemporary touch. So I can't
completely blame him.

What separates and distinguishes in critical theory? Good writing and clear, concise
thought. In my opinion. Those that got it. Peter Travers at Rolling Stone, Owen
Gleiberman at Entertainment Weekly. I thank you from the bottom. You gave it a
shot and went with it and wound up digging the ride.

But to my peeps, those that have frequented this board these last few months. I
thank you most of all. It's been a helluva fun time and one that I will never forget.

JC

ps - To KEVIN, thanks for being one of my most consistent defenders and funny
as fu*k to boot. That blast on some moron named Des was an all-timer. I haven't
even read his posts but your 'Find a rope and cease to exist' was inspired!

$14.5 MIL, that awesome. I'm excited to see it do well. Despite the crappy reviews, people still showed up. I have seen it 3 times so far. In one of your posts Joe, you said to see it again because now you have a road map of the film and it gets better the second time around, you're so right. It was better the second time around and the third. Now it's time to Smoke the rest of the world and make that internation money. Thanks alot for this blog, it's been a blast. Hope you start a general blog to update us on your upcoming projects.

As a longtime fan of both maniacal noir (how else to describe it?), and of "Narc", I've been lurking since this blog opened - didn't really feel I could comment until I'd actually *seen* the film. But I saw it over the weekend, and I just wanted to commend you. The film was a delight - and so has this blog been. It's so refreshing - and astounding - to find a director that's open, honest (blunt!) and actually interacts w/ the audiences. When I went to see this Saturday, the theater was packed, and the crowd was raucous - you'd won us all over. Here's to your sucess - may the future bring you hard work, happiness, luck, and more great projects!

Me and my friend watched this movie while tripping on LSD.

HOLY SHIT, it was so incredibly perfect. That scene with Ivy and Buddy in the bathroom had us bug-eyed... Ivy was really menacing there.

We also watched it the next day while sober. That sense of awe never left us.

The elevator action, the characters, the convulted storyline that all makes sense in the end... We haven't seen an action movie like this in AGES. Thanks for bringing it to life, man.

No, Joe, Thank You! I haven't seen the film yet, don't know when it'll be out in my area of the world (Asia), but I'll be there whenever it opens. Just based on your work with Ticker and Narc, I know you're one of those filmmakers that knows not all films are about languid diatribes of the human condition. The medium was created to and still must entertain. Sometimes that comes in the form a great action flick. Sometimes, it's Casablanca. But anyone who truly loves film should appreciate all its genres and never make more of it than what it is: two hours of escapism (visceral or diversionary). Unfortunately, we live in the digital age where anyone can express themselves to everyone; and some of these people start believing they are journalists or reviewers, when all they're really doing is just expressing their opinion--and as KEVIN pointed out, everyone's got one of those.

Anyway, would love to get some love from ya, Joe (assuming I qualify), but I'm worried how you'll confirm the identities of those who've contributed often to this board. Again, the dangers of the digital age.

I'm wondering how Ben Affleck was so cool with that scene? I, for one, never would've expected him to go for that, but kudos on that scene. Believe me when I say that the ENTIRE AUDIENCE was in stitches during that scene.

Great job.

the Ben Affleck scene was classic. I'm so happy the movie did good this weekend I plan on telling everyone to screw the reviews and see it for yourself. Out of all the scenes the karate kid was the best. Thanks for making us think a little Joe and I will see it again.

Joe-

Saw the movie Saturday night, and must say I was quite impressed by how smoothly all the elements fall into place. Given the flow of the picture, I am still scratching my head as to why critics are calling it a Tarantino rip-off. Did they even watch the movie, or is that what they were already expecting going in? It doesn't make sense. I must give you kudos for casting Ryan Reynolds in the movie. I have never been a huge fan, but felt his performance in "Aces" was quite impressive, very mature and focused. It takes some big chops to act alongside the amazing Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia, but I felt Reynolds pulled it off without a flaw. Also felt like Jeremy Piven's work was some of his best to date. His final scene in the hotel is pure bliss.

One question-The bizarre woman and the the little boy who help out the guy with his fingers blown off: was he still in such a state of shock that we were seeing them though his eyes? It was the only sequence in the picture that didn't quite click with me, although I did think that kid was funny.

Thanks again for an awesome experience. I look forward to seeing it again soon, and to seeing your upcoming projects.

In the future, it would be sweet to see an anime short focusing on Sykes and Watters's Triad hit. Hell, prequel shorts would be amazing for pretty much every character!

Joe,

This is my first post on here. I wish it wasn't. Been reading this thing for almost the entire length of its existence. Let me just tell you, ever since I read the plot for this film, early, early, early on in 2006 back on IMDb... ever since I saw the first trailers... ever since I came on here and read every blog post... ever since I went on the official site and read every single production note and nook and cranny, I knew there'd be something special here.

I'm ashamed to say I only saw Narc recently. It's instantly one of the most original, most refreshing crime dramas of the decade. I almost never anticipate a film at the level I did for Smokin' Aces. And every promise you made was delivered, man. Joe, you are the fucking master and I'd like to thank you myself for this unique, electrifying, manic, one-of-a-kind experience that I'm never going to forget. Fuck the critics, fuck the nay-sayers, I'm supporting the film to the death, as it's easily this decade's Pulp Fiction.

I'm seeing it again Wednesday (since I work at my local theatre and I get in for free, but even if I didn't, I'd definitely fucking pay!) but I'm not 100% sure on the metaphor you mentioned earlier. Don't get me wrong, I understood 95% of this film and had to slice up the ending just to explain it to my friends, but I'm wondering about the metaphor you were talking about.

Anyway, congrats on the Box Office success (I know how well it did, Epic Movie can go suck a dick) and please, for all of us Joe, keep making all your movies as amazing, as stylish, and as memorable as Smokin' Aces, one of the best action movies of this decade. There are simply no words to explain or do justice to how tremendous this picture is. I could write a 1000-word review and it still wouldn't be enough. Can't wait for your upcoming work, sir. You've got all our attention now and you definitely fucking deserve it.

-Eli
