BUNNY IS INDEED MISSING 03/11/2007 at 07:21 PM

Guys:

Scuttlebutt: How about NOTHING. How about a situation where the
press tries to stir it up. These things happen. Movies go away every day.
Reese is dealing with a lot of stuff in her life. So am I. We were running
up against it as far as time for prep and shooting and scripting, etc.
I had already commited to 'White Jazz' and the longer we stretched
'Bunny' the more in jeopardy the WJ schedule became. And there was
just no way I could let that happen. I need a nice extended prep period
for that flick.

And now I've got it.

That's it guys. I wish there were some truly tasty bits of gossip but there
just aren't. Sorry.

Onward and upward ya'll! White Jazz awaits.

JC

Hey Joe, thanks for the clearing up. I'm still a bit confused though.

Does this mean that Bunny Lake is going ahead before White Jazz? It could be construed that you're saying Bunny Lake is delayed until after White Jazz and I just wanted to clear that up.

What it sounds like you're saying is that Bunny was being stretched waiting for Witherspoon to be free and that was getting too much for everyone, but that Bunny is still going ahead before White Jazz.

Cheers Joe.

Thanks for the info, Joe. It's good to know that you seem to be taking a "silver lining" take on the situation. And you certainly show your class by not shooting any venom toward Reese's way. I think lesser personalities would've have really layed into her given the opportunity.
So, like Richard's question, I am a bit confused as to whether WJ was now pushing up in your schedule as BL is now delayed and you can spend more prep time on WJ. Can you please clear that up? Thanks!

Joe,
Thanks for the clarification. Nice to hear it from the horse's mouth, i.e. you, than the horse's ass, the media. Does that indeed mean White Jazz is next up and Bunny Lake is going on the backburner of sorts for the time being? Goddamn, I hope so.

Any updates on White Jazz? Has Matthew addressed the problems you mentioned before in regards to removing Exley and etc.?

Once again thank you for your side of the story and best of luck.

Kevin

ps Sorry Joe but I for one am glad Reese is off the project. I don't know her career choices of late leave a little to be desired. I enjoyed her work in films like Election and Freeway but feel she has given up on meatier roles. That's just my opinion. She really got into those two roles and garnered my attention.

I figured this was a case of bloggers trying to stir shit up . Glad to hear it was amicable, and hope the two of you work together in the future.

Well, that's good news, for the most part. So, is "Bunny Lake" over and done with? Looking forward to "White Jazz". I think it's Ellroy's second best novel, after "American Tabloid" (& just ahead of the delirious "Cold Six Thousand").

Glad to hear everything is cool, can't wait for White Jazz. Just bought the book last week in anticipation for the flick...about half way through and it's great. Good luck with the W prep, can't wait to hear more.

Joe, I just got a myspace bulletin from Buddy "Aces" Israel, urging me to see DEAD SILENCE on Friday. Sacrilege, that is. Using your creation to shill that shit. The Tremor Brothers need to march into Universal and pump whoever's responsible full of lead. And then piss on them.

Joe that sucks that the movie fell through, maybe you will be able to do it when you have more time. That brings me to a question maybe you can answer or someone else that frequents this blog can.
You must have a ton of time invested in this film already, i.e. script writing, scouting for locations, prep work. Will the studio pay you and your staff for this time and effort? I see movies fall apart all the time and have always wondered this.

Steve:

Everybody gets compensated. That's the good and bad news because somebody is always out a lot of money. But these things are normally written off against whatever overall agreement the producers have with the studio. Sure we had an investment in this but trust me, it was nowhere near what some are when huge movies fall apart. I speak from experience on that one....ha!

Joe,
With White Jazz closer on the horizon and Bunny Lake on the backburner of sorts, what project was your heart with or what project truly had/held your interest? I understand that's a rather tricky question to answer but I was just curious.

Also when an actor drops out of a project does it become difficult to imagine someone else in the role after all that time you had spent with the previous actor for the role? Also do you cater to that specific actor's talents when they are brought on board or is it...here's the script, these are the words, do your thing? I realize filmmaking is all about collaboration but how does it begin and where does it end in regards to getting the performance out of an actor that the script requires?

Kevin
