'A MOMENT TO REMEMBER' 05/25/2007 at 09:19 AM

Kids:

Hopefully, as we slick back Padron shots with beer chasers while slathering
on another coat of SPF 45 to ward off a nuclear sunburn this weekend, we
remember the sacrifices of our greatest generation and the sons of that generation
who died and continue to die on foreign fields of battle in the defense of democracy
and freedom.

....'and also starring Joe Carnahan in the role of 'Captain Bummer.'

Sorry guys. This is not me preaching or pointing fingers, so please don't think
that. It's just my way of reminding you, me and everybody else.

We've turned what should be a celebration of selfless courage and true Patriotism
(not that flimsy, dilluted 'brand', bearing-no-resemblance-to-the-real-thing bullshit the
Bush administration is fond of intoning as a critical catch-all for Iraq, but pure
Patriotic intent) into a four day, pre-summer kick off party...and there's nothing wrong
with that guys. I'm not advocating wearing red poppies and touring Arlington National
Cemetary this weekend. I am many things but try to refrain from and avoid the pratfalls
of, being a BLATANT hippocrite whenever possible.

We're all gonna to have a good time...and there's absolutely jacks*hit zero wrong with
that.

Let's just not lose the meaning of Memorial Day completely.

If we are to allow a sober thought to cut through the combined cloud of beer-buzz
and bong smoke, let's allow that thought to occur at about 3pm on Monday. This is
known as the "National Moment of Remembrance" a resolution that was passed
in December of 2000, which asks all Americans to: "Voluntarily and informally
observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from
whatever they are doing for a moment of silence."

Our troops are still over there, separated from their families, struggling
and fighting and dying. Whatever your issues with the war in Iraq, whatever
criticisms and complaints, the fact that our brothers and sisters are
over there and giving their lives in the service of this country, should never be
blunted or made less than by individual belief systems. I've been fairly trenchant in
my loathe and distaste for our present administration and their misguided efforts in
Iraq...and if Hell has an ass, I hope men like Dick Cheney and 'Rummy' Rumsfeld
get stuffed straight up it for all of eternity...That still doesn't change the present.

So at 3pm on monday, if you can, just take the briefest of moments to remember
those that have died and more importantly, a moment of prayer or meditation
or whatever you refer to it as, to send all your love and energy to those still on
the ground in Iraq...A kind of cosmic bid for their continued well-being and
safe return.

I believe that stuff works...from the bottom of my heart.

Okay, as I descend from my soap box, I wish you all a wonderful holiday and
will see each and every one of on the flip side.

My Best,

JC

couldn't agree more... I'm gonna email you that pic that sums up what you're saying. Neither New Times or LA Weekly would run it, (much less AP), beacuse they thought it was too dark. "Dark"?. Yeah I guess dark is how you could describe what this country is going through right now...

Hey Joe,

Finished Smokin' Aces again for the first time since I saw it in theatres... Just had some questions on a connection between it and LOST.

Now I could be just nuts, but there are five connections that I found between the movie and the show. Mainly just character names and actors from the show. First of all, the film features three characters (Jack, Bernard, and Hugo) that are character names in the show. The film also features actors Matthew Fox and Nestor Carbonell as well... Am I nuts or are you a fan of the show as well? I am still thinking of the season three finale from a few days back, so maybe I am just trying to find connections, but I thought it was cool.

And on another note, I mentioned having Jason Bateman in the film was like the best idea. But the person besides him that really stood out and made the film was Matthew Fox. His characteristics in the film were priceless and he is one of the best actors around. Thank you, thank you, thank you for putting him in. I have watched his scene like three or four times since last night. He's just a funny dude.

Oh, and the other connection was Andy Garcia's last name being LOCKE, as in John Locke....

So six connections so far. Time to go back to season two... ha. I am a loser!

That was very well said Mr.Carnahan. I don't give a rat's ass about politics but that doesn't mean that I don't appriciate the fact that there are enough men and women in this world to risk everything they have just to go over seas and protect us people in the beloved United States of America. Cheers to bbq ribs, beer, and remembering those who have lost their lives and those who are continuing to lose their lives fighting for our country.

Joe - nice post. Couldn't agree more.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but not only has this war divided a nation, but it's definitely divided families. Before he returned and before my parents' realized what I was trying to say since day 1, there was always that "you're on this side, I'm on the other" mentality and thankfully that's changed, but I still get the "hey, liberal bastard" line!

What I wish people understood the most was how you CAN Support the Troops and NOT support the "idea" of this war. Not only that, but supporting the troops ISN'T a slogan. It never has been and it never will be. I don't care what 'C' grade Yale graduate says it and if that guy wants a debate, line up the f*cking event cause I'll go twelve rounds!

Like most holidays that have become so commercialized in this land of capitalism it would be nice to take a second on Monday and think of where we would be if those who came before us hadn't had the bravery and patriotism to defend a democratic nation promoting freedom.

Because we've strayed from that mentality (to the idea of fighting for oil, instead of freedom) doesn't mean we should forget the soldiers who fight, not because they want to secure a refinery, but because they believe in the same ideal as those soldiers who came before them and fought (directly) for freedom - having a choice in life is worth defending!

Unfortunately, the people "in" power abuse that choice.
