PREQUEL STUFFS 05/24/2007 at 09:18 AM

Kids:

Looks like it might be more of a prequel we're gunning for. The
Nigerians and I came up with a fairly simple story that is, I think
about as politically topical as you can get, under the guise of a balls-
out barnburner of an action flick. I think the only reason to ever do
something that goes straight to DVD (which has this malodorous
vibe for some reason) is that it gives you the ability to really push
it. And I don't mean pushing the obvious sex/violence tandem but
pushing CONTENT and doing things from a straight storytelling angle
that they (the studio) would never allow in a 'mainstream' theatrical
release.

That's what's exciting. Going out and sneaking up on an unsuspecting
audience and doing something smart and timely and somewhat radical
in tone. I'm pumped. I wish I could be more specific. As the story and
script begin to allign, perhaps I can be.

Without promising, I can say, with some certainty, that the Tremor Bros.
will be returning...and that's as far as I want to go for now.

Keep killin' em.

Joe,

How much support is Universal providing this process a second time around?

With DTV a fairly successful route to go, in regards to sequels, profits, and so on, is there pressure from the studio to recapture the flair and feeling Aces had and/or are they allowing you "carte blanche" to push the film forward in terms of the type of story you are choosing this time time around?

God, so many questions to ask in regards to this project.

Also, the numbers for the ACES DVD did those include the HD-DVD sales figures as well?

Best of luck with the writing process on this project. Ecstatic to see/hear so many Carnahan projects moving forward.

ps What are your fave Coen brothers films? I know you have mentioned Blood Simple before but what about Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, or The Man Who Wasn't There...where do they fit behind that film?

Joe,

Psyched to hear about the progress regarding the film, DTV or otherwise.

I'm not sure why DTV has such a negative vibe about it. If the movie is good enough, who cares if a movie is released theatrically or DTV. I'm sure I read somewhere that DVD releases normally gross more for a film than the run it had in cinemas.

Anyway, I think I'm babbling on here. Who the hell are these Nigerians? I have the feeling that I'm out of the loop on this and I should really know who these people are.

Keep us updated!!!

Oh, and one more thing, Joe. DC or Marvel?

Doubler,

From the sounds of it, Joe is a Marvel guy. Take a gander at the question link up above. Iron Man, the Surfer, Marvel creations.

Ah well, you can't win 'em all.

A lot of fans will be happy with the Tremor Bros. info. :) And two words why DTV has that negative vibe: Steven Segal. LOL! As long as he is no where near the 'Smokin' Aces' prequel...it should do well. LOL!

Sounds good, maybe some more use of the Tremor bros. car in the prequel?

Maybe we'll find out that the karate kid is a product of one of the Tremor Brother's late night escapades??

I have a few Segal DTV DVDs. And Van Damme. Heck, I think I'm keeping these guys careers alive!

Tremors returning? Two seconds, I need to go to a happy dance.

Okay, back. Yes, I actually did a little dance. Anyway, I can't wait to hear more. Feel free to take your time, though; we don't need you getting all stressed. Your hair might fall out. ;]
