Right now, at Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, my eight month old niece is
undergoing a procedure to correct a malformation of what is known as
the 'Vein of Galen' which is essentially a large deep vein at the base of
the brain. The neurosurgeon overseeing this procedure is the man who
wrote the book on it. My brother and his wife literally have the best guy
on the planet tending to their little girl. They will be performing what
is known as an embolization, which involves feeding a filament-thin catheter
up through the veins leading to the defect. They will then use glue or small
platinum coils to seal off the malformation. It may take more than one
procedure to complete this repair but in all likelihood she will recover
completely and not experience any further complications.

In most instances, the child usually experiences rapid heart failure or
some type of cerebral atrophy and the procedure becomes an emergency.
In Amelia's case, she was snatching the reflex hammer out of the physician's
hand and displaying absolutely no outward signs of this ailment beyond
a small, prominent little protruding vein under her right eye. It was this
that prompted my brother and his wife to take her in. Had they waited
even another month it may have been too late.

She is this robust, radiant, beautiful little girl and I ask everyone to take
a small moment and send out whatever good will and well wishes you can
spare.

It would mean the world.

Have a great weekend everybody.

JC

Joe - if you only understood how much I understand this right now...

A week and a half ago my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer and was scheduled to go in and have the tumor removed. I got home last night from work to discover that now they are going to have to remove her entire breast and that the tumor stretches from her arm pit, to her breast, to her rib cage.

Her surgery is on June 4th and if anyone has any well wishes they can spare after sending them Joe's brother's way, my entire family could use them! I can see, as when my brother went off to war, this will be a time I will need to be a parent for my parents! It's not easy, but the test of human resolve will be revealed and through the tears I'm believing in triumph.

Joe - well wishes your way, your brother's way and that beautiful baby's way! So glad the outcome is something to celebrate. Children, as fragile as they seem, are somehow undeniably amazing.

All the best!

JW

May God's healing hands touch Amelia and keep her happy and healthy.

God Bless the Children, for they are our future.

Joe I hope all goes well with your precious little niece's surgery...She is very lucky to have one of the best doctors at her service...loving parents by her side...and a pretty cool uncle in her corner. :)

Well wishes to your family too JW. :) I lost my mom to cancer many years ago...but her life, energy, and memories are still a part of me. We go on. :)

Everything's crossed JC, and loads of positive waves heading her way.

You know, regardless of Hollywood fame, or multi-million dollar box-office, it all comes down to stuff like this...human connection.

Hope all the energy of these well wishes makes it through the fiber-optics and lands squarely in that hospital room!

Peace,
RTA
