Right now, at Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, my eight month old niece is
undergoing a procedure to correct a malformation of what is known as
the 'Vein of Galen' which is essentially a large deep vein at the base of
the brain. The neurosurgeon overseeing this procedure is the man who
wrote the book on it. My brother and his wife literally have the best guy
on the planet tending to their little girl. They will be performing what
is known as an embolization, which involves feeding a filament-thin catheter
up through the veins leading to the defect. They will then use glue or small
platinum coils to seal off the malformation. It may take more than one
procedure to complete this repair but in all likelihood she will recover
completely and not experience any further complications.
In most instances, the child usually experiences rapid heart failure or
some type of cerebral atrophy and the procedure becomes an emergency.
In Amelia's case, she was snatching the reflex hammer out of the physician's
hand and displaying absolutely no outward signs of this ailment beyond
a small, prominent little protruding vein under her right eye. It was this
that prompted my brother and his wife to take her in. Had they waited
even another month it may have been too late.
She is this robust, radiant, beautiful little girl and I ask everyone to take
a small moment and send out whatever good will and well wishes you can
spare.
It would mean the world.
Have a great weekend everybody.
