PREQUEL SCRIPT UNDERWAY 07/17/2007 at 03:15 PM

Kids:

So Universal has given us the greenlight to begin the prequel
script and done so with great enthusiasm. They were as adamant
about NOT doing a prequel as I was about doing one but since the
Nigerians NAILED the outline, they all got hipped and jumped at it. If all
bodes well, we'll have a completed script inside 8 weeks and be
shooting 10 weeks later.

What are the chances of getting cast members from "Smokin' Aces" for the prequel? Has anyone already committed?

Best of luck to the Chapmanites!

Excellent news! Congratulations. Will you be able to start revealing some information so we Carnafans can think up some titles for ya?

Yeah, like Universal can't scrap up an extra few mill. from the Bourne series and give it to a straight-to-dvd prequel! Glad they came to their senses!

I won't ask for specifics, but keep us posted on anything relevant!

Thanks, Joe.

i can't say i'm excited about this, seeing as 1) you're not directing or writing, and 2) Smokin' aces didn't quite work for me. I like the twist at the end, but there was something off about the delivery. There was also problems with the pacing of the story, which is a shame cause I loved a lot of the characters. I would like think that if you would recut the movie (which I don't think will happen) completely, you have something really amazing there. Nevertheless, good luck. Looking forward to future projects.

Have the Nigerians done any other films in the past. I am dying to see their work. Anything. No matter how shitty it is.

I read somewhere that you wrote like 21 full blown scripts before you blew up. How can a film student like myself read your past works ( to study structure), or your future work if that is even possible.

Hate to even go there, but UNEVEN, if you thought Aces wasn't that good, why would you say you're not excited about the "prequel" because it isn't being done by Joe?

I don't know about anyone else, but that comment seemed a little... uneven?

PS. What I can't stand is people who want all things for all films. You can't watch an independent film and judge it like you're watching a Jerry Bruckheimer production. Just like you can't watch another Joe C. film and compare it to NARC. Joe knew what he was doing with Aces and it was pretty much a character piece. Unfortunately, just like M. Night, everyone will judge based on that first piece. Or, "so-called" first piece because M. Night made two films before The Sixth Sense that no one saw, just like Joe made Blood, Guts, Bullets... but at least that film you can find on IFC.

You could say the issue was that the "resolution" didn't quite match what was trying to be answered within the film because throughout most of the film we aren't wondering who Israel is, but who is going to get to him first, so the resolution seemed off, but that's if you're judging it based on a "plot" film and I just don't think that is what Joe was going for.

If you're going to judge the film it needs to be judged within the context of the actual film and not in comparison to something else...

This is the best thing I've heard in a long time. I'm so very happy.

Thanks for brightening my day!

Great news!! Can't wait to hear more about it.

I agree with JeffreyWright about people who want all things for all films, I couldn't say it a better way. Problem is if you make something like a road movie or action movie, you don't expect the same as for a thriller. I mean they're completely different and I think the only thing you have to do is sit down and enjoy. If the movie is good, whether it has some incoherences or not, you will forget them.

About Somkin'Aces, when I was in Cognac I heard some people say: It took 15 min in the elevator for the Nazi guys to reach the floor, and only 5 by stairs for the FBI. Or even worst: We don't even know what happened to Sharice! -- Just listen...

Besides that, each one enjoyes a movie its way but please since the whole film is coherent with itself, don't look for each detail, Smokin'Aces is not a complex thriller in which each detail counts.

That said, like most of those who appreciated Smokin'Aces, I can't wait to know more about the prequel. Will Ben Affleck be part of it for more than 30 min? ;)
