'PRIDE' BLOWOUT 02/27/2008 at 08:57 AM

Guys:

I've known about the 'Pride and Glory' situation for some time and was
hoping that it would be resolved somehow because the f*cking film is
GREAT. Nothing is worse than the idea that a film is unreleasable when it's clearly
not. I've seen the film four times now and it's just gotten better every time.
So New Line either needs to nut up or cut us loose. Rally behind the movie and
give it the attention and consideration it deserves or let us roll. This script dates
back pre-NARC, so it is obviously very near and dear to my heart.

Bully to Gav for going out on the line. He loves his film. It's what few people
have the balls to do in this business which is confront something, head on and
deal with it.

It'll get sorted. The movie speaks for itself. It just needs the right hands on it
now.

Looking forward to it.
It's gotta be better than 'We Own the Night'
What a disappointment that was...

The heads over at "New Line" are waist high in shit.

The studio has been losing money left and right for quite some time, were in an infamous legal battle with Peter Jackson over unpaid "Rings" residuals, and are facing a buyout at the hands of Warner Brothers.

I think it's safe to say that they need to get their shit together.

I hope it gets resolved soon, since the project was first talked about years back with Jackman,Wahlberg and Duvall i was excited about it.It seems a project that O'Connor has tried to get off the ground for years and as soon as the film is completed he gets dicked over.
Gavin O'Connor did very good work with Tumbleweeds and Miracle and with the cast he's got(plus Sage Francis laying some tunes down for it)the project is a must see for myself and its heartbreaking to see it pushed back a whole year when we've only just started 08.
What are the chances of another studio buying it though? They have to pay $30 mil and then put up money for marketing it Why would they do that when they can put up $30 mil for one of their own projects to be made?

Hollywood tends to like "cop" films.

I haven't seen the film, so I don't know - why the delay? Any specifics? The only thing I could surmise are test audience disapprovals - blah, blah, blah!

What I never understand about the studios dealing with these films is the fact that every time something like this happens, the press gets a hold of it, sends it out to the public and the longer the film stays in the can and not at a multi-plex the further down the gross goes. I don't know how many times this has happened with the same exact result - no cash (or very little) on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (straight to DVD the next week). So, what exactly does "holding out" do?

It's like shooting yourself in the foot and telling the doctor - "no surgery, just give it some time, it'll heal itself."

Peace,

JW

any chance of a video post of a clip from the movie?

JC, coupla people over at the IMDB boards are saying that a trailer for this film is playing before Vantage Point.

Now, what the hell is the point of playing a trailer if the movie doesn't have a release date yet?

I saw this movie at a screening a while ago. all due respect to you joe, because i loved narc, but this film is far from great. I won't give away key moments. Personally I felt assaulted by it. It's like "Crash" in this way: It resists you the viewer from entering the story, rather it forces you to accept a sad take on life. one that is so over the top, that you ultimately dont care. unlike in narc where you actually felt for the characters, and understood their dualities.

Story-wise nothing is explicit: Early on there's a "hit" but you don't know how it's connected or who's responsible. --the cabbie hit. But this never improves, the viewer is made to work trying to figure things out based only on Colin Farrell's Irish/Boston accent mish-mash. he is terrible.

There was unintentional laughter during act 3 when the dad bawls out the wife during a family argument--I don't think the producers liked that moment. I was near last to leave and saw a bunch of worried faces on the producers. i mean hissing laughter and boos.

The violence is on par with war-time atrocities (probably worse than war time) which simply makes you question the film's premises even more rather than feel more invited into its world , because it is a forced perspective . oconnor and carnahan talking about as tough as two kids from film school posing as legacy cop progeny.

Camera wise it's a job to watch too: the operator is racking focus, zooming, and jar-panning (my new word for this film) so that half of the shot is out of focus while theyre looking for a frame. very self conscious and pulls you out of reality. On the plus side, gratefully there are a few images that inspire-especially a few long takes of a police funeral that is pretty and well-composed. Also there are "beauty" shots of the actual NYC exteriors--things like elevated trains and long bridge spans that allow a breath between beatings, home invasions, gun play, tortures, and constant barrage of f-word patter.
im sure its close to your heart joe considering when it was written, but it is immature writing and doesnt show the truthful gravitas of narc. maybe it was the acting as well. patric and liotta tower of this cast in terms of complexity and nuance. narc haunts, while pride and glory bludgeons. i hate studio politics as much as anyone, but i can see their point in not knowing what to do with an expensive 30 million dollar vilolent cop movie that misses so badly

Loved the trailer, Joe. Looking forward to this. Sad to hear you didn't like it, Erin. I gotta' say, though, your comments just made me want to see it more. Bludgeons? What else would I expect from Smokin' Joe? And I really loved Miracle, despite Mike Rich getting fucked out of his credit. Gotta' love the cast in this, although I'm one who likes Colin Farrel. Anyone out there see In Bruges? I'm looking forward to that one as well.

Hope this one gets some breaks and sees the light of day, Joe. You catch some rough shakes, but it's always encouraging to see your crazy-hardcore enthusiasm. Goes to show that the working stiffs can still bust through, even without the lucky breaks. Can't wait for your next one!

That is a difficult situation. I'll admit that I'm no fan of Bob Shaye after what he said about Peter Jackson. As I see it, it doesn't matter who was in the right. He had no business going public with a borish rant. In this case, it sounds like another case of Hollywood politics. No, it isn't right, and I hope things get resolved one way or another. It must be very disheartening to pour your heart and soul into something only to to get the run-around. The project and everyone involved deserve better.

Best Wishes, Wendy

Kenny
That was ERIC's comments, not Erin's.
I have seen it yet.
But I do agree with Simon about We own the Night. Another cop film. A disappointment.
