TRIBECA - PLAYING FOR CHANGE 04/22/2008 at 09:22 PM

Guys:

The venerable Liz Smith issues a little love for the Mark Johnson/Jonathan
Walls documentary I was lucky enough to be involved with. Below is from
today's VARIETY:

THE TRIBECA Film Festival bows Sunday and documentary makers are hotly anticipating the next biggie. Two years ago, "Jesus Camp" launched the Tribeca and went on for an Oscar nomination. Last year "Taxi to the Darkside" bowed and won this year's documentary Academy Award. Sizzlers this year are "Chevolution," a look back at Che Guevara from Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa, who also made: "Little Children" and "Little Miss Sunshine." Then there's a crime documentary from Andrew Lauren titled "This is Not a Robbery," all about America's oldest bank robber. We'll see Julia Checokway's "Waiting for Hockney," about a man who spent eight years drawing a photo of Marilyn Monroe and then set out to show it to the artist David Hockey. Let's add "Kassim the Dream," about a child soldier turned boxer ... the Joe Carnahan produced feel-good music documentary "Playing for Change" ... and the Beastie Boy/director Adam Yauch's sports documentary "Gunning for That #1 Spot."

And the Tribeca Program Notes re: Playing For Change also show some lovin': "This paean to humanity will have music lovers dancing in their seats." And who doesn't love music!?
I will make it there to that festival one day.

Will definitely see this film.

The term "feel-good" never felt so good. Congratulations on the mention. :)

Best Wishes, Wendy

Carnahan you are an ASS. Quit your bitching about NARC, and all its hardships. Thats what happens with first movies with no budget. Youre just goddamned lucky you had actors who saved you, and a cinematographer that made your shoe string look classic. My cousin is Michael Jordan, no not the basketball god, but as you remember, your first assistant director. He has plenty of stories about your on set meltdowns, and clueless screaming rants. So stop painting yourself as some martyred saint, putting up with "difficult" cast, and hellish conditiuons. You havent been in this business long enough to even complain with context. Plus, most of the crew fought the fight everyday. Dont blame them for wondering if they would get a paycheck to feed their families. you describing a "mutiny" makes you sound heroic. But anyone who has watched you since has gotten used to your loud, and empty bragging. I was on the set one day in Toronto visiting Michael, and you were screaming just to hear your own voice yell.
You should be so lucky to have a crew, and experience like you had up here. Glad Hollywood has caught on to your BS. We saw it instantly

John - glad to see you took a break from Hillary's campaign coordination to bring some negativity over here... that's unbelievably appreciated! Especially when this was a thread about a documentary attempting to do something positive in this world. Loved the website!

I can't speak for Joe's tirades, but I'm sure he's had them, as we ALL have and the last time I checked Hollywood directors weren't exactly known for their low-key ambiguity and lack of vocal chords (you know how difficult it is to get everyone on the same page when everyone has the "right" point of view, but a different job?). Go to YouTube and type in Lily Tomlin! That should take care of that.

Joe doesn't exactly strike me as the type of person who doesn't understand the things he does or has done, nor acknowledge his non-sainthood or inability to improve. But, you taking the time to state your, of course, unbiased point of view, along with your indepth industry knowledge and experience (hmmm... maybe I missed that) is not only greatly heroic, but prophetically astute.

I can only thank the Lord that we have people like you shining a beacon of light into the areas there's just no way we would have otherwise been aware of.

Back to the campaign it is. See what other photos you can find when you type Bin Laden into Google.

Peace,

JW

Wow.

Now the personal attacks are coming from cousins of crew-members Joe has worked with. Jumpin' Jesus on a Cross!

Next time you get a headache John, swallow bullets not aspirin.

Well Joe look at this way, one less self-righteous dip-shit A.D. you need to employ... you can thank his inane cousin for that.

Kevin

PS John, do you always pass yourself of as the cousin to the A.D. of Narc? Fucking hysterical.

Posted by: john atkin 04/24/2008 at 03:14 PM

Well Jeffrey and Kevin, first off, the fact that I'm a gay man should have nothing to do with my criticisms. I've been in a monagamous relationship with Stephen, my lover, for about eight years now and my homosexuality has yet to cloud my judgement! It's clear that youve gleaned all your knowledge of movies and their inner workings from Joe himself, and any other internet site you live by. desperate little men that cling to any crumbs that some misunderstood genius throws you.
But if you knew how a set works, you would know that the 1st AD runs it. The schedule, locations, decisions about time, and the pressure about making the day. We have all listened for the better part of five years now, how Saint Joe, worked through hellish conditions , unruly actors, and a mutinous crew. It's an insult to any of the crew who worked through the sub zero conditions, and did their best to bring their specific expertise to make a first timer like Carnahan realize his dream, never really knowing if Friday would be payday. Same was true with the actors. This fat , bald, blowhard that I stare at in the mirror everyday should get down on his knees and thank everyone who put their time effort and skills into that film. Michael will attest to the fact that NOT ONE. Now, back to that upside down BJ I was giving....

John - I couldn't give a sh.t about what you think brother and if you ever got an invite to the table I'd wipe you clean. Simple. Nothin' to it. Not a second thought.

NOW... let's get back to the POST...

PLAYING FOR CHANGE

Good stuff.

JW

PS. Feel free to call me what you want, I've been called worse by better, but if you're gonna do it, at least have the originality to make up something that isn't so goddamn repetitive and hasn't been used by every troll on this site. Let me know if you'd like it written for you!
