SOFIA, BULGARIA 06/24/2008 at 11:08 PM

Kids:

In Bulgaria right now on my old asst Tunde's film '4th Kind' which I'm producing.
Pretty interesting part of the world. It's got that post-communist, nouve capitalist
vibe so it's this mishmash of conflicting styles and sensibilities. You can feel this
kind of seesaw battle between soviet-era pragmatism and the more free-for-all
western influences. It's beautiful city too. Reminds me a lot of Prague. I'm going to
venture out later and take a bunch of pictures and try to avoid getting rolled by
gypsies.

My uncle went to Bulgaria and was frequently propositioned by numerous ladies of the night.

Joe, watch your wallet!

Ah! a subject I know something about.
I spent many weeks in Eastern Europe, mostly the Baltic states, giving lectures and visiting the very poor country of Moldova (between the Ukraine and Romania) to site visit a senior center.
The most interesting part of the trips was always getting the locals, sometimes necessary through interpretors, to discuss "soviet times" as they call it. Very heady stuff. I have written stories about it.
Also about WWII times if you can find someone old enough.

And in Moldova, the king of the gypsies has gone capitalist. He is wealthy and owns fruit juice factories! At least did before communism was voted back there in past few years.

Fear more the mafioso!! Awful in most those places.
But I would still love to be there in Sofia! Have not been there.

Sounds pretty cool, Erin!

Enjoy yourself Joe! :)

Sounds bad-ass!

From IMDB:

Fact-based thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusation of a federal cover up.

Starring: Milla Jovovich

Never made it to Sofia, but a comparison to Prague raises the eyebrows!

Enjoy!

Joe,

Oh how it must be nice to be in the warm embrace of Sofia this time of year. You did say Bulgaria and not Coppola, correct? Sounds like you should hit the night club Sin City if you are cruising around the city. Please make sure you take some pictures of Milla for me, her architecture is stunning.

Thanks,
DanV

I imagine that it is a fascinating place. Eastern European locations have so much beauty and character. I would love to see that part of the world myself someday -- especially Prague, which seems to be well-deserving of its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.

I was thinking the same about Hostel Doubler :)

Eastern Europe is great, but France is great too in case you have some free time while you're in Europe ^^^
